**Incident Summary**
On January 20, 2025, we identified an issue affecting Real User Monitoring (RUM) data collection for our EU data region. The DNS record for `rumcollector.eu.uptime.com` was not resolving correctly, preventing the collection of critical performance data from December 23, 2024, until the issue was resolved.
**Root Cause**
This issue occurred when we delegated `eu.uptime.com` to a different hosted zone in AWS. Unfortunately, we missed copying the existing DNS records for `*.eu.uptime.com` to the new zone, resulting in the failure of `rumcollector.eu.uptime.com` to resolve. Additionally, our monitoring processes did not include checks for the functionality of this specific endpoint, which delayed our detection of the issue.
**Impact**
- RUM data collection in the EU region was disrupted from December 23, 2024, until the issue was resolved on January 20, 2025.
- This issue was isolated to the EU region and did not impact RUM data collection in the US region or other services.
- Customers relying on RUM for insights into user behavior and website performance in the EU region may have experienced incomplete data during this period.
**Resolution**
The missing DNS records for `*.eu.uptime.com` have been restored and verified. RUM data collection in the EU region resumed as expected on January 20, 2025. We have also implemented monitoring for the `rumcollector.eu.uptime.com` endpoint to ensure timely detection of any future issues.
**Preventive Measures**
To ensure this does not happen again, we are taking the following actions:
- Updating our DNS management process to include mandatory validation of DNS records during zone migrations.
- Implementing automated monitoring to detect missing or misconfigured DNS records promptly.
- Expanding our endpoint monitoring to include all critical services, including `rumcollector.eu.uptime.com`.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this incident may have caused. Uptime.com remains committed to providing reliable monitoring solutions to help you maintain optimal website performance. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to improve our processes.
