We are beginning to see signs of recovery and continue to monitor for full resolution.
We continue to investigate increased API error rates for EC2 APIs in the US-EAST-1 Region. This issue is mainly affecting the DescribeInstanceTypes, DescribeInstanceTypeOfferings and DescribeReservedInstancesOfferings APIs. Beginning around 12:34 PM PDT, customers may receive an Internal Error displayed in the Management Console under the "Instance Types" section. Other AWS Services that call these APIs during their launch or creation workflows may also be impacted by this issue; some examples include creating new DataSync Tasks that copy data to/from the US-EAST-1 Region, or creating new AutoScaling Groups. Existing Autoscaling Groups are unaffected by this, and continue to scale appropriately based on their current configuration. The creation of new instances via the RunInstance API is not affected by this issue, but workflows that require the response of the 'DescribeInstanceTypes' API before proceeding would be unable to proceed successfully. As a workaround, we recommend using the EC2 APIs to launch new instances using the RunInstance command specifying the desired instance type. For a comprehensive list of available instance types, please see our documentation here.
We believe we have identified the root cause, but are continuing to verify that. In parallel, we are working on multiple paths to mitigation. We will continue to provide updates as we have them available, or by 3:30 PM PDT at the latest.
