Affirm experienced degraded SMS authentication service for 14.3 hours, causing increased PIN retry rates for US users during checkout due to a central point of failure affecting multiple third-party SMS providers. While users had to retry SMS PINs more frequently, they were still able to successfully complete checkouts after retrying. The issue was resolved by switching traffic to a recovered SMS service.
