Proton suffered a major 2.3-hour global outage caused by a critical cooling failure in their Frankfurt datacenter, affecting virtually all services including Mail, VPN, Drive, Pass, Bridge, and web and mobile apps. Users across multiple platforms and regions reported servers being completely unreachable, VPN connections dropping repeatedly, and inability to access email, passwords, and files — with some noting frustration that the status page initially showed all systems operational. A fix was implemented by shifting traffic to backup sites, and services were restored with no data loss, though some users experienced lingering delays in email delivery and push notifications during the final cleanup phase.
