Proton's Apple developer account was unexpectedly revoked, causing the Proton Mail and Proton Meet macOS desktop apps to be blocked at the OS level and falsely flagged as malware for some users. User data and accounts were not compromised, and the malware warnings were false positives. The issue was resolved within approximately 3.4 hours by releasing updated versions of both apps, which users needed to download or update to restore normal functionality.

Dear Proton community,
On Friday, October 2, 2026, an issue with Apple's developer program caused Proton Mail for Mac and Proton Meet for Mac to stop opening on macOS for some users. MacOS also incorrectly flagged them as malware in some cases.
Your data and accounts are safe. The apps were not compromised, and the malware warning was a false positive. While we continue to work with Apple to resolve the situation, we have also released new versions of the apps to work around the problem for affected users. If you find that either Proton Mail for Mac or Proton Meet for Mac fail to open, you may need to download and install the app again from the links below.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
- Download Proton Mail for macOS from https://proton.me/mail/download
- Download Proton Meet for macOS from https://proton.me/meet/download
Stay secure,
The Proton Team
Some users on MacOS may be seeing errors stating that our Proton Mail & Proton Meet apps are qualified as malware. This is an error, there is no actual malware threat, and we're working together with Apple to restore functionality for our MacOS users.
For context, earlier today one of our developer accounts with Apple was revoked for unknown reasons, causing previously legitimate apps to be blocked at the operating system level on MacOS. In the meantime, we recommend using the webapps. Apologies for the disruptions caused by this, we will communicate further once we have more information and updates.
