Upon investigation of the connectivity issues that were observed around Washington DC, Maryland, and North Carolina, it appears to be a result of 3G network shutdown activities surfacing an incompatibility between T-Mobile’s network and some devices. Devices configured as “voice centric” that require a circuit switched (CS) connection over legacy 2G and 3G networks, even while being connected to the 4G LTE network for data, may be unable to connect to the network or maintain a connection if it is handed off to other nodes if they are interacting with a node that no longer supports 3G and 2G is unavailable.

Devices may require a modem firmware update to ensure they can continue to connect to T-Mobile’s network after the 2G and 3G networks are shutdown. You may need to consult with your modem provider to determine if you need to update your firmware or how to configure your devices as the 3G, and soon 2G, network is shutdown across the United States.

Configuring devices as “data centric”, such as by using a packet switch only (PS-only) mode, should allow your devices to connect and remain connected as the device moves throughout the network. We expect to provide another update in 2 hour or as soon as more information becomes available.

INVESTIGATING about 3 years ago - at 09/01/2022 02:26PM

We continue investigating increased reports of connectivity issues when using Programmable Wireless SIMs in the United States. Reports received thus far have been for devices deployed on the east coast, specifically around Washington DC, Maryland, and North Carolina. We are observing devices being able to initially connect to the T-Mobile US network but then losing connectivity and may have trouble reconnecting.

The issue appears to only impact devices performing a combined attachment where the modem connects to both the 4G LTE network and the 2G/3G networks. Some devices may ignore the failures on the 2G/3G connection and may be able to continue to use data but may not be able to use SMS. Devices configured as packet switched only (PS-only) that only require data are not expected to be impacted. Our engineers are working with our carrier partner to resolve the issue. We expect to provide another update in 16 hours or as soon as more information becomes available.
